Yellow-bellied Marmot (Marmota flaviventris)
Vernon, British Columbia, Canada
It is mid-summer and this Marmot is one of the last to be found ouside of the burrow. Depending on elevation Marmots may spend up 8 months hibernating so they need a good layer of fat before entering this cycle. This fellow just seemed to be having a last look before heading off for a long sleep.

 • Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)
Photographed at Wittys Lagoon, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
The Mute Swan is one of three swan species in British Columbia, but unlike the Tundra Swan and the Trumpeter Swan, it has been introduced to North America. The species is native to Eurasia and it is said that all the Mute Swans in North America can trace their lineage to the Royal Swannery in England.

The species survives in a feral state only on southern Vancouver Island; Mute Swans elsewhere in the province are either captive birds, or escapes.

 • Eastern Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
Beacon Hill Park, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
All squirrels found in Beacon Hill Park are Eastern grey squirrels and are an introduced species. Colour variations of the so-called “grey” squirrel include brown, red, black and occasionally, white. This little squirrel sat quiently and still for an unsually long period of time an allowed me to take quite a few photographs. Just when I started to think he was not well off he went, darting here and there at pace you would expect to see.

 • Raccoon (Procyon lotor)
Octopus Island, British Columbia, Canada
So often our only reference for these masked animals is the behavior we are witness to in urban areas. We have a family in our own backyard and at times it can be a bit trying. I think that's what made watching this small group foraging along the waters edge, in a natural environment, so wonderful to see.
